Nakakura specializes in kominka and kyōmachiya renovations

Kyoto was the capital of Japan for 1,200 years. The city carries a rich heritage of traditional culture, and many kominka (traditional houses) and kyōmachiya (townhouses that combine residential and commercial spaces), built using traditional construction techniques, still remain.
However, in recent years, aging kominka and kyōmachiya have been gradually demolished, leading to the loss of Kyoto’s historic streetscape. We are deeply concerned about this trend, and are committed to preserving and revitalizing as many of these historic buildings as possible through careful renovation.
Since kominka and kyōmachiya were constructed using methods entirely different from modern homes, their restoration and renovation require specialized knowledge and skills. Through years of experience in preserving and repurposing these buildings, we have accumulated the expertise needed to handle their unique challenges. We are one of the few construction companies in Kyoto dedicated to the restoration of traditional architecture.

Utilizing kominka and kyōmachiya as homes

Kominka and kyōmachiya were originally built as residences. With appropriate renovations, they can still serve as comfortable living spaces today.
However, a major challenge in repurposing these buildings is their aging structure and poor insulation. Since kominka and kyōmachiya were built using methods that did not consider insulation, they tend to be especially cold in the winter.
We are a construction company specializing not only in kominka and kyōmachiya renovations but also in new constructions. As a result, we can apply our knowledge of the latest insulation technologies and climate control systems to transform traditional buildings into comfortable living spaces that are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This allows you to enjoy the charm of historic homes with the comfort of modern living.

The repurposing of kominka and kyōmachiya for non-residential uses is also an effective way to pass these buildings on to future generations. In recent years, there are more and more examples of accommodations, shops, and even offices and business spaces that utilize traditional buildings.
We have worked on many such projects, including the renovation of kyōmachiya into inns such as Kuraya , as well as shops and restaurants.
These facilities are well regarded by international visitors to Japan and have become popular destinations where guests can experience traditional Japanese living and aesthetics.
